Syntonics’ Record-Setting SINCGARS Antennas Extend Range of SINCGARS Radios
COLUMBIA, MD. August 25, 2008 . . . Syntonics LLC, based in Columbia, Md., participated in two successful flights of its ultra-light SINCGARS antenna system developed earlier this year. The SINCGARS antenna systems were flown on “Zephyr” unmanned aerial vehicles built by QinetiQ, a British defense company. Syntonics performed this work under contract to Thales Communications Inc. (Thales) of Clarksburg, Maryland.

Syntonics designed, analyzed and built the specialized antenna system in less than four months. The company delivered and installed two systems on the Zephyr UAVs at the Yuma Proving Grounds as members of the QinetiQ/Thales team. Each ultra-light antenna system was used by a quartet of SINCGARS radios supplied by Thales to demonstrate high altitude radio communications.

As reported elsewhere, Zephyr set an unofficial record by staying in the air for three-and-a-half days. Tests conducted by DoD demonstrated clear two-way radio communications more than 300 miles apart using Syntonics’ antenna systems.
