The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) in San Diego sponsored the PICO development. Syntonics developed the PICO Advanced Clock for precision timekeeping, especially in mission-critical applications that rely on the Global Positioning System (GPS) for precision time and a "holdover" timekeeping capability to accommodate interruptions in the GPS signal. The PICO Advanced Clock provides precise, reliable timekeeping through the use of an ensemble of quartz oscillators (patent pending), as an alternative to an atomic clock. Missile launching systems developed and produced by Lockheed Martin use precise timing instrumentation to improve launcher reliability, and the PICO technology will be used on future launching products.
The two companies met at a forum organized by the U.S. Navy in May 2003 when SPAWAR selected Syntonics to participate in the Navy's Commercialization Assistance Program (CAP) for companies performing Phase II SBIR projects.
